Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
